Ron Mueck

Have you ever heard of the film “Labyrinth“? It was a 1986 fantasy film with David Bowie playing Jareth the Goblin King. It casted stars like Jennifer Connelly, again David Bowie. But this post is not about either of the two. It’s about Ron Mueck who actually made the puppets in the film as well as contributing to the voice of Ludo.

Obviously Mueck didn’t get famous for becoming a Hollywood stud. He’s most known for his puppet work. In 1996 he transitioned to fine arts which led him to collaborated with his mother-in-law thus landing a few of his pieces in the Hayward Gallery.

After being introduce to a few high end people, Ron began collecting commissions for his work. He created Dead Dad the piece that would bring him recognition for Charles Saatchi a big time advertising agency guru.

Before moving forward here’s a bit of his background. As a child, Ron Mueck experimented with puppetry and model making, influenced by his parents’ work as toy makers. Failing selection to art school, Mueck began to work as a window-dresser before progressing to make and operate puppet animals for children’s television programs. In America in the mid-1980s he worked on The Muppet Show and Sesame Street, before settling in London where he assisted with the special effects for the films Dreamchild (1985) and Labyrinth (1986).

You probably wonder what’s the biggie about Ron Mueck. Well if you haven’t glanced at the photos yet, you will see that he actually create bigger than life size sculptures. The sculptures are detailed to the extent of scariness. He’s commissioned several pieces. However, the ones you will see in museums are a collection of his. He’s most notable for sculptures such as…Pregnant Woman, Two Women Grim, Mask ll, Big Man, Baby, and Wild Man.

If you get a chance to see this up close and personal (which I have not yet) notice how realistic the sculptures look. The materials he use are somewhere stored away in an article somewhere. But for now take a look at his work.

Labyrinth was my all-time favorite movie as a kid, it’s nice to see the folk behind the scenes are still keeping busy. On the flip side it’s so sad that the film that defined my childhood is best known for gratuitous Bowie crotch-shots…

I thought I was the only one noticed the infinity of crotch shots. The sad truth is that I wanted to rock the same outfit he wears when singing “Magic Baby,” to a high school dance.

Thanks to my mothers brute honesty she stop me from making a popularity mistake.

I loved Labrynth! It’s one of my favorites. It’s so funny to see what a baby face Jennifer Connelly has! I loved all of the characters and even though most of them were puppets, it had me fooled.

Refills

This have to be the funniest iphone 4 videos thus far. These guys had me rolling with how seriously they played their parts. Via Funny or Die.

These are the funniest and best news slip ups ever on tv. Check it out — you need volume and a noose to stop you from bursting into laughter.

I remember when “Good Times” was the episode of choice. And no matter the circumstances they “keep they head above water, making a way” when they could. The “Jefferson’s” were moving on up to the east side and finally got that piece of pie they worked so hard for. And Sanford & Son bought and sold junk to live. Now we have Paris Hilton crowding my visual space trying to find a fake BFF. And Brodie Love (modern day male courting). I shall close my eyes and walk past TV’s.

You have to appreciate witty creative ideas that are sweet. I love the ending when the guy in boxer fell down at the tape, he kissed the lady–didn’t break a stride, jump on his stud, and set the eagle free to sore–the earth. Fun video! Via the Case.

I love how designer Jarred Bishop pushed the limits of the web. Notice the background as you scroll how the images are of the post, but only appears with it’s respective content. Unbelievable.

I laughed so hard after listening to these kids play the theme song of 2001. I’m not sure. But I ended up listening to this about five times and some how found some genius in it. You will need volume.
